Great mosque of Djenne


Between all the building made in clay around the world, the great mosque of Djenne is the largest.



It is located in northern Mali (West Africa).



In 1240,Before Djenne became one of the big cities of the empire of Songhai, the first mosque was build.That construction was ordered by the king koi kunbore.The mosque was demolished two times,the first in 1896,the second in 1906.The constuction of the current mosque was began in this last date(1906) and finished at 1907 or 1909.



The mosque is in the form of square with 75 meters on each side.Its height is 20 meters.The walls are between 40 to 60 cm in thickness.



The mosque can contain 1000 people.



Every year the community of Djenne organize an official ceremony for the maintenance of the mosque.



Thousands of students have learned Coran and islamic law there.The mosque of Djenne is the great symbol of islam's influence on this area of Africa.The town of Djenne (300 years B.C) and the great mosque of Djenne deserve to be tourist places.Tha's why they was designed in 1988 by UNESCO a worldheritage.
